5th International Cable-Supported Bridge Operators’ Conference (ICSBOC) and LRFD Workshop on Bridge Design & Evaluation
August 28-29, 2006 at the Crowne Plaza Times Square Hotel in NYC

The Bridge Engineering Association organized the 5th ICSBOC along with the New York State Bridge Authority and a distinguished group of renowned bridge engineers from all over the world. Throughout August 28-29, 2006, bridge operators, designers and academics from Croatia, Denmark, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Norway, South Korea, Switzerland, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the USA presented state-of-the-art material, assuring an authoritative account on the developments in the field of cable-supported bridges. The conference proceedings were published in "Advances in Cable-Supported Bridges". Select papers are published in a special issue of the Journal of Bridge Structures, Vol. 2, Issue 2, 2006. Other papers are published in a CD-ROM format.

Technical Program

The 5th ICSBOC featured a strong technical program designed specifically for engineers. To ensure the highest quality program, all papers have undergone a thorough review process and were published in a special Bridge Engineering Association Publication.

Keynote Speakers

Addressing the most current issues faced by today's engineers and designers, this year's Keynote Session includes three highly esteemed professionals, Barry R. Colford, Deputy General Manager, Forth Estuary Transport Authority, UK, Koji Kawaguchi, Manager for Technical Affairs, Long - Span Bridge Engineering Center, Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Expressway Co., Ltd, Japan, and Henry Perahia, Deputy Commissioner and Chief Bridge Officer, New York City Department of Transportation, USA.

LRFD Workshop on Bridge Design & Evaluation

The instructors for the LRFD workshop on “Highway Bridge Design and Evaluation” were: Dr. John M. Kulicki, Dr. Dennis R. Mertz, and Dr. Wagdy Wassef.
Dr. John M. Kulicki, P.E. has over thirty-five years of experience in bridge analysis and design. He is the President/CEO and Chief Engineer of Modjeski and Masters, Inc. Dr. Kulicki led a 50-Member Team of experts in the development of the probability-based LRFD Bridge Design Specification which was adopted by AASHTO in 1993.
Dr. Dennis R. Mertz, P.E. is a Professor in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of Delaware and Director of UD’s Center for Innovative Bridge Engineering. He holds a Ph.D. in civil engineering from Lehigh University. Dr. Mertz is the Founding Editor of the Journal of Bridge Engineering, and he is an internationally recognized expert in Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) theory and modern bridge design practices. Dr. Mertz serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Bridge Structures.
Dr. Wagdy Wassef, P.E. is a Senior Associate with Modjeski and Masters, Inc. He has been involved in a variety of bridge design and rehabilitation projects. He was also involved in the development of the AASHTO-LRFD Bridge Design specification and is involved in the continuing maintenance and updating of the specifications.

This year's Bridge Tour was on board the Lexington Yacht, where we had the opportunity to enjoy Manhattan scenery and the stretch of New York’s historic bridges.
